What is a Tax Return?
A tax return is the method you use to inform HMRC about your taxable income, such as rental income, capital gains, or other earnings. It’s also where you report any expenses you've incurred and declare any tax allowances or tax reliefs you may qualify for. HMRC processes this information to calculate the total amount of tax you owe, or whether you're entitled to a tax rebate. If you're self-employed, you’ll file a self-assessment tax return to determine your tax allowances and obligations.

The rules around tax returns can be complex, with various regulations and deadlines to follow. It’s important to get familiar with the requirements to avoid any penalties—after all, HMRC expects you to understand your tax obligations.

Tax returns aren’t just for the self-employed. There are several reasons why HMRC may require a tax return from you, such as if you're a company director or have income from outside your main job. Ignoring HMRC’s request can lead to penalties, so it’s crucial to stay compliant.

If you’ve incurred work-related expenses or suspect you're owed a tax rebate, our tax rebate calculator can help guide you in the right direction.
When is the Tax Return Deadline?
The deadline for filing your tax return online is the 31st of January the following year. While you can technically file your return at any point up to that date, it’s best not to leave it until the last minute. The earlier you file, the more time you’ll have to plan and save for any tax payments due.

Filing your tax return sooner also gives you a clear picture of what you owe, giving you plenty of time to prepare financially. As the tax return deadline approaches, HMRC tends to get busier, so submitting early can help you avoid potential delays or issues.
What Documents Do I Need to File My Tax Return?
The documents required to file a Self Assessment tax return depend on your individual circumstances. It’s important to gather the necessary paperwork before starting the filing process to ensure everything is accurate. Here are some of the most important documents you may need. Remember, not all of them will apply to everyone, especially if you haven’t worked for an employer during the tax year.
Key Documents for Filing Your Tax Return:
-
Form P45: If you left an employer during the tax year, this shows your income and tax deductions up to the point you left.
-
Form P60: This summarises your income and the tax you’ve paid through your employer over the course of the tax year.
-
Form P11D: If you receive any “benefits in kind” (like a company car or healthcare), this form details them.
-
Records of Redundancy Payments or Taxed Award Schemes: Essential for reporting additional income and ensuring you’re not overtaxed.
-
Rental Income & Expenses: If you’re a landlord, you’ll need records of any rental income and related expenses.
-
Savings & Investment Statements: Include any interest or dividends earned from savings and investments.
-
Self-Employment Income & Expenses: A full breakdown of your income and expenses is crucial if you’re self-employed. Make sure to keep all receipts and documents to back up your claims.
Documents for New Self-Employed Filers:
If you’re new to self-employment, you’ll also need to register for the Self Assessment system. To do that, you’ll require the following details:
-
Personal Information: Your name, address, date of birth, and contact details.
-
National Insurance Number: Essential for identifying your tax records with HMRC.
-
Start Date of Self-Employment: The date you officially became self-employed.
-
Business Information: Details about the type and nature of your business, including your business address and phone number.
Can I See My Tax Return Online?
Once you've filed your tax return online, you can access it, along with previous returns from earlier tax years, by logging into your Government Gateway account. If you need to make changes to your return, you can do so within the portal. However, there’s a time limit for amendments—any corrections must be made within 12 months of the filing deadline (31st January).

Things become a bit more complex if you’ve submitted your Self Assessment tax return on paper. In that case, you’ll need to download a new tax return form from the government website and make the necessary corrections. The deadline for paper tax returns is different, so you’ll have 12 months from the paper deadline (31st October) to make amendments.
When Can I Expect to Receive My Tax Return?
You won’t usually receive a tax return form directly from HMRC, as they stopped sending these out in 2020. However, you can file your tax return online at any point after the end of the tax year it applies to by logging into your account on the government website. If you need to use a paper tax return, you can also download one from there.

While you won't receive your tax return from HMRC, you can expect reminders when you need to submit a Self Assessment tax return. Always take these reminders seriously, even if you haven’t made any self-employment profits or are unsure why you’re required to file a return. At Ultra Tax Ltd, we ensure that our clients are reminded well in advance of any deadlines, so we can help you prepare and file your tax return on time.
